Dr. Melanie Gregg is offering an 8-week course on September 15 which will meet in person on Wednesday from 7 pm- 8:30 pm. This class is a compassion skills training program designed to teach participants the tools needed to cultivate a mindfulness and self-compassion practice and is not group therapy.
Mindful Self-Compassion for Teens is an empirically supported 8-session program designed to cultivate the skill of self-compassion in teens. This course teaches core principles and practices that enable teens to respond to the challenges of these critical years with kindness and self-compassion. The course fee is $350 which can be paid via Venmo or check.
In this 8-session course which meets weekly for 1.5 hours, teens engage in developmentally appropriate activities and carefully crafted practices and meditations, which provide them with the opportunity to learn how to navigate the emotional ups and downs of life with greater ease. Backed by research, findings indicate increases in emotional well-being and greater resilience after taking the course
Following in the footsteps of the adult MSC program, MSC Teens is rooted in the three key components of self-compassion: self-kindness, common humanity and mindful, balanced awareness. These elements serve to open the hearts of teens to their own suffering, so they can learn to give themselves what they truly need, recognize that they are not alone in their suffering, and encourage an open-minded acceptance of the struggle they are facing.
This curriculum was adapted from the adult Mindful Self-Compassion created by Drs. Kristin Neff and Christopher Germer and have been endorsed by the founders.
If you or your teen has questions about what this class is like for teens, these are great videos to watch!
- In this unedited video, Teen's perspective after taking MSC a self-compassion teacher talks with a teen about her experience taking the MFY class and, in her words, how it changed her outlook on life.
- Another video sponsored by The Benji Project (https://selfcompassion.web.unc.edu ) will give you greater insight into how the group can help teens increase resilience and greater balance and decrease stress, anxiety, and depression.
