Diane Gillaspie

Social Studies Teacher

Diane Gillaspie is a Middle School English/Language Arts and Social Studies Teacher at Xavier Educational Academy. Prior to joining our team as a full time teacher in January 2020, Diane was a beloved tutor to Xavier students for eight years. In 1993, Diane was named “Teacher of the Year” by Alief ISD, an award dedicated to the memory of her later father who passed away earlier that year. Diane earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Special Education from Central Michigan University and a Master’s in Education specializing in Learning Disabilities and has been teaching for more than 30 years!

Born in Detroit, Michigan as the youngest of six, Diane has always enjoyed being around children. She married her high school sweetheart in 1975, and, together, they moved to Berkeley, California where she realized how much joy she had in working with children experiencing unique learning challenges. In 1985, she moved to Houston, Texas where she taught for 30 years. After a brief retirement, she realized she missed teaching and officially joined the Xavier team! Outside of the classroom, Diane loves to dance, garden, listen to music, spend time with her granddaughter and be creative.
